This paper analyses and reflects on how garments and clothing, worn by individuals photographed in the XIX and XX centuries, have turned into signals which, are believed to allow the recognition of their cultural and ethnic location, thus establishing a real Indian Fashion, legitimized and accepted by the whole society. But if looked in detail, we realize that those signals offer a dislocating effect because the image of the “Chilean Indian” is subtly distorted, precisely by means of manipulating garments and clothes.
